    Shana Tova Umetukah

    Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Leshanah tovah tikateiv v’teichateim—May you be inscribed for a good year!”

toile goat wall art by heather gentile-collins

Rosh Hashanah is upon us. This is the somber celebration of the new year for Jews everywhere. Today, people visit the graves of tzaddikim (righteous, saintly ones), light candles, recite psalms and pray to G-d to be forgiven for their sins before entering the new year. Over the two days of Rosh Hashanah, there will be much prayer, more lighting of candles, visits to a synagogue to hear the Shofar (traditionally a ram’s horn) sounded on both days, the throwing away of sins at a body of water and a special prayer (Tashlich) recited to ask for forgiveness from the lord, as well as feasting on specially prepared foods.

    letterpress apple notecards

There are many special foods that are eaten over Rosh Hashanah. If you collected apples after our last post on Johnny Appleseed, you are in luck, as apples dipped in honey are eaten to herald in a sweet year to come. Traditionally, Challah (braided loaf of bread) is also dipped in honey and eaten. The head of a kosher animal or fish is served as well, to encourage you to be the “head” of the class. Pomegranates also grace the table, as do any other sweet foods to promote a sweet year. You will not find nuts (egoz) though, as their numerical value hold negative connotations.

personalized tee shirt - polka dot fish

Before they recite the Tashlich prayers, Jews must first find a body of water to cast their sins into. The body of water could be a lake, river or ocean, but preferably should contain fish. The presence of fish is important for several reasons, but one is because “just as fish may be caught in a fisherman’s net, so, too, we are caught in the net of judgment”. As prayers are recited, old sins are symbolically cast away into the waters. In this way, they can start the new year fresh and without sin. For those that have difficulty attending Tashlich prayers on the first day of Rosh Hashanah never fear, as you have until the end of Hoshanah Rabba (Sukkot) to perform these important rituals.

So while Jews approach the Day of Judgement, it is a good time for all to consider our sins and in turn, let them go. The idea of casting our wrongs aside and in return getting sweets to summon forth a “sweet” new year is very appealing. A little candy is always a good thing in our books. And to have people greet you with “Shana Tova Umetukah” (A good and sweet year), just fills me with a warm feeling inside. So may you all lay down your burdens and rejoice in the sweetness of life. Happy New Year to all our Jewish friends this week. May your Rosh Hashanah celebrations fill you with a new beginning and the sweetness you deserve.

    Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed!

    Monday, September 26th, 2011

The arrival of Fall has in mind of apples. Americans have had a love affair with apples since the days when Johnny Appleseed wandered the US planting his apple seeds hither and yon. In fact, today is John Chapman’s birthday, aka Johnny Appleseed (Sep 26, 1774 – Mar 18, 1845)! Yes, Johnny Appleseed was more than just a folk figure. He planted apple nurseries across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. All those apples have probably helped to create some of the many apple-related quotes that appear in our regular lexicon of catch phrases and quotes too. So today, we celebrate Johnny Appleseed with a look at one of his favorite things – apples!

    First Day of Autumn

    Friday, September 23rd, 2011

The chill in the air just won’t go away. The sun has begun to set noticeably sooner and rises a little later each morning. A warning of frost drifts on the breeze and I know even before I look at the calendar what day it is. Today is the first day of Autumn.

It would not be Autumn without the beautiful leaves that blaze into their glory in shades of reds, yellows and oranges, before drifting on the  wind to their winter homes. Caroline Blum has captured the beauty of the season here in this gorgeous piece. This “Autumn Blossom” wall art from Oopsy Daisy by Caroline Blum is an incredibly vibrant and colorful depiction of the autumn season. This top quality canvas reproduction is made using the Giclee printing process and has the look and feel of an original painting. Each canvas is stretched over wood bars, glass-free, and comes ready to hang! No framing is required. This is the ideal surface for kids’ rooms as there is no glass to break! Artwork is finished on all sides and comes with a wire hanger for wall mounting. It can easily be wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth. Makes a great gift idea. Designed by artist Caroline Blum and it comes with the designer’s biography attached to the back.

It isn’t just the trees busy at this time of year. Farmers are also out toiling in their fields, collecting the last of the season’s bountiful harvests. As their wares pile up at farmer’s markets everywhere, they offer temptation to all to take the fruits and vegetables of the farmer’s  labors home to the supper table. If you are thinking about sharing some of the harvest feasts with friends or relatives, then better start planning now and get those invitations out! These personalized invitations “Autumn Harvest” are perfect for inviting friends and family to a party or other special event such as engagements and anniversaries! Choose from several font styles (Shown here is Sweetheart font). Personalize these invitations with 10 lines of text to announce your special event. These 5″ x 7″ flat cards are perfect for invitations or announcements!

And while there might be some heat left later in the afternoon on some days, the mornings are starting to feel pretty crisp nowadays. That isn’t bound to change any time soon either. While already highlighted some warm new clothes for Mom, we thought that you might be worrying about the kids too. The new Bella Bliss quilted riding jacket is an ideal choice for the cool Fall days ahead. Medium weight, with snaps up the front, this jacket is both cozy and easy to wear. Coordinating gingham border along lining which peeks out at cuffs and front when open. In both camel and red, in sizes 4-12 years, you might want to get one for the fall and another for the spring!

Let’s face it. There will be more wet days ahead, and we are bound to see the mercury drop even further before we are ready for it, so perhaps now is a good time to take stock of the kids toys too. For those wet days, when you just don’t want to face the fact that Autumn has arrived, why not pop up the charlotte play tent by lucy and michael, and let the children go wild inside instead.

This Charlotte play tent by Lucy and Michael is perfect for any baby’s big brother or sister to play in. Imaginative play at its best! Children love the lined doors and paned windows in each lucy & michael play tent. Parents love the design – solid, painted wood and great prints. The Charlotte model is black and white baroque floral with yellow and black accents. Parents love giving their children an heirloom-quality toy that requires no whistles or lights to delight. And children are amused literally for hours on end as they thrill in occupying a space of their own. Without fail, your child’s friends and play dates will beg to “go in the tent!”

You can’t beat that on a rainy Autumn day!

Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head

    Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

    Rain, rain and more rain in the forecast for the week. Instead of moping about it, how about some music? The raindrops put me in mind of a song;

raindrops crib bedding set by oilo

Raindrops keep falling on my head

And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed

    Nothin’ seems to fit

Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

sunny day baby blanket by sweet william

So I just did me some talkin’ to the sun

And I said I didn’t like the way he’ got things done

    Sleepin’ on the job

Those raindrops are falling on my, head they keep falling

oopsy daisy wall art – find the key to your happiness by shelly kennedy

But there’s one thing I know

The blues he sends to meet me won’t defeat me

It won’t be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep falling on my head

    Beautiful Mom Invitations

But that doesn’t mean my eyes will soon be turnin’ red

    Crying’s not for me

Cause I’m never gonna stop the rain by complainin’

    Because I’m free

    Nothing’s worrying me.*

And on that note, hope you are keeping dry today!

    Baby Essentials 101

    Monday, September 12th, 2011

So let’s face it, September always steals all the thunder with its Back-to-School overdrive. Not everyone has a little person that is returning to school though. There are plenty of parents who are dreaming of the days when their children start school, so that they don’t have to get up for those 3am feedings every night anymore. There are also more than a few Mommies that are still at the point where they are dreaming and wondering what the precious little baby that is growing in their tummies will look like when they finally get to meet them face to face. All this talk of school can be a little scary or daunting for those that haven’t had to deal with the first day of school, teary-eyed goodbyes yet. You will get there one day, and it will be sooner than you think! Today though, let’s celebrate the youngest of the children in our world and forget about their formalized schooling. Let’s think babies and the staples that they need to make a good start at life!

Long before parents think about school supply shopping, their obsession is with a myriad of baby supplies. It can often seem overwhelming for parents-to-be to peer into the baby department in a store and wonder where to start. Well, what is the one thing that you will need most of? DIAPERS, hands down! Yes, there is a never-ending need for diapers, be they cloth or disposable. While disposable diapers are handy, cloth diapers are seeing a resurgence, in part due to their greener impact on our environment. That is why offers a wide range of diaper covers for every new parent’s needs. This blue chocolate corduroy diaper cover is just one example. These corduroy diaper covers are the perfect gift for any baby girl. They match perfectly with our corduroy dresses or are a great gift on their own. These bloomers are made with the softest featherwale baby corduroy fabric and trimmed with ric rac. Made with our blue corduroy fabric and trimmed in chocolate ric rac.

So after buying more diapers than you would have ever dreamed possible (and managing to go through them all within a few scant weeks), what else is a staple for having a baby 101? You might end up with way more than you think you need at a baby shower, but you can never have enough baby blankets. For skeptical pregnant first-time parents, Trust Us! Those cute little baby blankets will get covered in spit-up, absorb the extras from yet another diaper blow-out and will still be going strong when your toddler drags them through the mud with a handful of stuffed animals tied securely inside. Yup, another blankie is always a good idea.  This baby boy patchwork blanket is the ultimate personalized baby gift! Custom designed using your baby’s name, initials, birth information and even a personal dedication if you choose. It is handmade with 100% cotton twill, cotton batting, and reversed to solid white cotton twill. Each blanket measures 27 X 36 inches, an ideal size for the stroller or crib (when age appropriate), and for nap time at preschool! The blanket can be designed with just baby’s first name or with more detailed information.  This is such a great blanket and makes a really special gift. It is so unique, so personal and makes a wonderful keepsake after all of the mileage it experiences during baby’s early days.

Don’t think it all stops there! You will need bottles, soothers, baby gates and more. If you are concerned that a plastic baby gate just won’t go with your decor though, don’t fret. offers a GREAT substitute for unsightly baby gates. Our standard and custom built doors transform a child’s room into a unique, personal and SAFE space.

Opening the door to a child’s imagination begins with a door. This high quality personalized element adds fun and interest to a room before you have even entered it. This solid wood core birch door is built to fit a standard size doorframe for easy installation. The half door provides a child unique access to their room and when locked provides the parents the safety typically requiring an unsightly baby gate. It is every new parent’s dream accessory!

While we could also go on and on about the hundreds of outfits that your little munchkin will go through over the months and years ahead, we suggest that you peruse some of our beautiful baby clothing lines that we have available yourself. You know that you need to buy clothes, and in the early days you might be needing a new outfit for junior 2-6 times a day, but we would rather dream about the quiet moments when it is just you and them snuggled into the rocker to read a book. Outfits and toys certainly have their place, but will come and go over the years. One of the best staples that you can invest in right at the beginning of your child’s life is a love of reading for them. One day they will be headed out the door for a higher education without you, but until that time you are your child’s best teacher. Reading a book with them, paves the way to  a lifelong love of learning that is the best investment you can ever make. And no baby nursery would be complete without the classic books of Margaret Wise Brown. These beloved bedtime classics have lulled generations of children to sleep with their soothing sounds. These three classics are wrapped together in a beautifully designed gift package, and include Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny, with pictures by Clement Hurd, and Big Red Barn, illustrated by Felicia Bond.

    Happy Grandparents Day

    Friday, September 9th, 2011

We might be early, but we want to wish a very happy Grandparents Day to all of the fabulous grandparents out there in the world. The US has officially been celebrating grandparents since September 9th 1979, so we thought that we should too! Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day every year, but we shall be with our own grandparents this Sunday, so thought we would send out our love early, so that you can do so too!

We love our very own grandparents enough to even poke a little fun at our blue-rinse grandmas, and grandpas that fall asleep in their easy chairs as soon as they push away from the dinner table. Have you had the pleasure of holding a skein of Gramma’s yarn, while she knits you a beautiful neon blue sweater that you never asked for? Perhaps you have been lucky enough to lick the bowl, after baking shortbread cookies with your Nana. Did your Gramps ever prattle on about the time when he and Uncle Lester and cousin Jimmy snuck out to tip cows in the next town over? I hope you nodded in delight at these antics, because one day you too will be sharing these golden nuggets with your less than interested grandchildren. Oh, but we jest though! Being spoiled by Grandma and Grandpa (until being returned to the care of our folks), was one of the best memories of childhood we have. So salutes all that Grandparents do today! Here are a few items that we carry that are perfect to keep your very special grandparents in mind.

Celebrate grandparents and our love and affection for them with this hand painted frame. The solid background features an “I (heart shape) my” across the top and “grandma & grandpa” written across the bottom. The sides of the frame feature a coordinating gingham ribbon. Change grandma to oma or grandpa to pop pop or what ever endearment you use. Just enter below what you would like it to say…no additional charge. The frame is 5 x 7 and available in cream/sand or white/sand (as shown). Perfect gift all year round.

Every Grandpa needs a magnetic note pad to help keep track of his tasks! This note pad features specially crafted artwork at the top that says ”We Love Grandpa” along with crayons and paintbrushes. It comes beautifully wrapped in a cello bag with a blue grosgrain bow. Grandpa will be sure to remember who gave him this special notepad each and every time he uses it! BonBon Notes measure 3 3/4″ x 9″ and are printed on recycled warm white paper. As an added appeal, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this product will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and other organizations promoting breast cancer awareness. You can celebrate Grandpa and make a difference int he world at the same time. Perfect!

This personalized grandparents block makes the perfect Grandparent gift. Each side can be engraved with the names of up to three grandchildren, their birth dates and a short gift message from you. If there are not enough grandchildren for all four sides, we will fill empty sides with the grandchildren clip art shown in the product picture. This will be a gift to cherish.
