    Holiday Crafts with the Kids

    Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

If your kids are anything like mine, once they see the decorations coming out they are right there wanting to help. While we always want to encourage children’s independence and a sense of accomplishment, you cannot always just hand them the fragile snow globes to place on the edge of the end tables. I have a better idea for how to get the kids to help with the holiday decorating. How about getting your children to create their own holiday trinkets! Here are a few simple craft ideas that your kids will love to create, then decorate the house with.

A simple craft is to pull out the crayons and card stock paper, then make the suggestion for your kids to make their own Christmas cards for their friends at school. Add in the glue and some green, white & red pompoms to see where they take their holiday cheer. You might find Frosty the snow man waving hello or Santa brushing the soot from his jolly red suit. They will love any excuse to pull out their doodlebugz crayon apron (pink stripe) anyway. Get drawing! You just might find that you get one too to add to your Christmas cards!

If you think that you can handle a little bit of confetti at the craft table, then grab some scissors for another classic winter craft that all kids love – paper snowflakes! Give your children a stack of paper and watch the snowflakes appear. I bet you won’t see two the same! They can even decorate the edges with a little silver or gold glitter glue once they are done creating their delicate flakes. Stick them to your windows. Hang them on the tree. You could even use a few for personalized Christmas cards for Grandma  and Grandpa. You certainly won’t fret over these ornaments, as there will be plenty more where they came from over the weeks to come! Heck, you could even try your hand at making a chain of them to dangle from the mantel, instead of the simple paper chains that are always so popular with young artists!

This cute craft is a great one for the kids to make for Holiday gifts for their teachers -Rudolph paper cups. Grab some left over paper cups from your Thanksgiving gathering and put paint smocks on the kids to get dirty! You will need brown and pink paint, pipe cleaners for antlers and of course a red pompom for his nose. Little thumbs are perfect to make Rudolph’s cheeks rosy. Now you just need to add googly eyes, some felt ears and some tasty nibblies to fill your cup with!

One of my favorite holiday nibblies has got to be shortbread cookies. Why not try Lemon Lavender Shortbread this year! The kids will love to put their aprons back on and help with this too. And has star is born cookie cutters to help your little ones shape the stars too!

    Lemon Lavender Shortbread

    • 1 1/2 cups unsalted Butter, softened
    • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup icing sugar, sifted
    • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour, sifted (approx.)
    • 1/2 cup cornstarch, sifted
    • 1 1/2 tsp finely grated lemon zest (about ½ lemon)
    • 1/4 cup coarse sugar
    • 2 tbsp finely chopped dried lavender
    • 1 egg white, beaten

In a large bowl, beat the butter with the sugar using an electric mixer, for 2 minutes or until light and fluffy. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornstarch and lemon zest. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture; stir until just combined. Form dough into a 1 1/2-inch (4 cm) thick disc; wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until firm.

Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Roll dough out, on a lightly floured surface, to be 1/4-inch (5 mm) thick. Cut dough with a 2-inch (5 cm) cookie cutter of any shape. Re-roll scraps and cut additional cookies until all the dough is used. Place cutouts on parchment-lined baking sheets; refrigerate for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine coarse sugar with lavender. Lightly brush cookies with egg white and sprinkle with sugar mixture. Lightly press the tops to ensure the lavender sticks to the dough.

Bake cookies, in batches, for 12 to 15 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned around the edges. Cool cookies on baking sheet for 5 minutes; transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.

NOW you just have to make sure that enough of them last to share with the children’s teachers! Have fun decorating!

    Let’s Start Decorating

    Monday, November 28th, 2011

Ok people, have you been able to do your pants back up yet from your Thanksgiving feast last week? Whew, it was delicious, but I always seem to eat too much! So after all the dinner dishes were cleaned and put away, I felt like I needed to do something to work off all that turkey. You know what I did – holiday decorating! Yippee, I just love the holidays. And I can’t get enough of the tinsel and mistletoe! Have you started transforming your home for the holidays yet? If you are still trying to work your way out of that Thanksgiving mindset, I just have to share some of our fabulous holiday decor to kick start your decorating mojo. Check out these fabulous items!

So let’s start with Santa. If  you’ve been nice and think he is going to be swinging by your house this year, then you better have a few stocking hanging by the fireplace this Christmas. Why not pick up some new stockings this year to replace the old ones that you have been using for the last gazillion years! This very special handmade Christmas stocking in candy cane stripe features hand crocheted green balls  that hang from the ribbed cuff. It is 100% cotton and sure to be able to handle all of the goodies that Santa wants to stuff in it.

If you have the stockings out, then maybe its time to put up the Christmas tree too! has a wide variety of Christmas ornaments to choose from. Are you interested in personalizing? We do that. Would you like to give a photo ornament to the Grandparents? You know they would love it! has plenty available. We even have ornaments for fido! These adorable personalized ceramic dog bone ornaments are a great addition to the family tree. Hand-made, your little furry family member will appreciate not being forgotten. Makes for a wonderful gift too!

Oh, and don’t forget your Elf on the Shelf! If you don’t have one, it is a must for the kids. Because how does Santa really know who’s been naughty or nice?

The elf answers the age old question in “The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition”. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is an activity the entire family will enjoy. Based on the tradition* Carol Aebersold began with her family in the 1970s, this cleverly rhymed children’s book explains that Santa knows who is naughty and/or nice because he sends a scout elf to every home. Included is a 10-inch stuffed “elf” who, during the holiday season, silently perches somewhere in the house from dawn to dusk only to disappear (with some parental assistance!) for his nightly magical trip back to the North Pole. The next morning, he reappears in a different place to resume his task. A clever way to encourage kids to behave!

And the pièce de résistance is displaying your new family portraits in a beautiful family photo frame.

Celebrate Christmas and the holidays with the fabulous personalized picture frame. The frame comes in a variety of colors and includes your family name and the year. Frame holds 5 x 7 photos and personalization is in fancy font. Frame is sold only in size and style shown. A great way to celebrate and decorate during the holiday season and all year long. Makes a great gift for special friends and family as well.

Here’s hoping that I have given you some ideas to run with. Happy decorating!

    Organizing for Thanksgiving

    Friday, November 18th, 2011

I have been so focused on starting my Christmas shopping that I almost forgot about Thanksgiving! Goodness, but that certainly comes first. Time to switch gears, I guess. I need to think about turkey and the trimmings, rearranging the room to fit in all the guests and putting fresh linens on the spare bed for overnight guests. Plus maybe allow myself a moment or two to reflect on being thankful for all that I have. That might have to come next week though, as right now I need to get busy organizing!

First step, let’s think about who will be here. Between us and various aunts, uncles and cousins, I think we will need more seating. We just won’t all fit around the dining table this year, I fear. That means extra seating and I have just the thing – my art for kids antoinette bench!

The Antoinette Bench with Patina finish by Art for Kids is an elegant accent to any room. The bench features beautiful handcrafted woodwork and an upholstered seat. It is shown here with custom fabric. This piece is custom done in patina upfinish. The style is also available in many different finishes. And at Width: 46″ x Depth: 17″ x Height: 16 1/2″, it will be sure to fit a couple of people on Thanksgiving!

In fact, now that I think about it, we could put the kids at their very own table! That will make them happy and the rest of the adults will be able to eat in peace for a few minutes too. In theory anyway!

Both you and your children can enjoy this decorative and practical Vintage Table and Chairs set by Art For Kids. The table and chairs are crafted from birch and alder woods. It is available in many motifs and finishes. A great place to play and a great way to accent your child’s room. You can even encourage the kids to set their table themselves with their own special centerpieces and fancy settings.  They will think they are so grown up and sophisticated. Perfect!

Oh, and I have just the thing for table settings! How about our personalized melamine tableware! Cute and functional, all in one. Our preppy cards melamine plates and bowls tableware are the perfect choice for design and ease at mealtime. Forget paper and china! Opt for colorful and reusable melamine tableware instead. Better for the environment than their disposable counterparts, breaking. Concerned parents can take comfort in knowing that these are made from BPA-free plastic [no Bisphenol-A], so they are safe for kids and grown-ups alike. Plus, they can be personalized, have optional backgrounds and patterns, as well as being available with any of our icons. Another thing checked off the list.

And what else did I have to do? Oh yes, freshen up the spare bedroom. Time for some new bedding! And they deserve only the best with our king size gordonsbury bedding – beetles and bees.

This Beetles and Bees (King) bedding set by Gordonsbury features the company’s legendary attention to quality and detail. Each piece of bedding is skillfully hand embroidered on pure cotton or linen. Harmonious vibrant thread colors are used to interpret and give life to the adorable beetles and bees motif and theme. The set will add a classic and elegant flair to any room!

Now, I can finish off the room with a pretty bouquet of flowers on the bedside table to make our guests feel pampered. Lovely. No time to linger though, as now I have to get cracking in the kitchen. I think I hear a turkey gobbling my name. Have a great weekend!

    Encouraging Tolerance

    Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

I just read that today is the International Day of Tolerance. According to the UN’s website, they are promoting

“Heads of State and Government to advance human welfare, freedom and progress everywhere, as well as to encourage tolerance, respect, dialogue and cooperation among different cultures, civilizations and peoples.”

That is a worthy cause that we all should heed. It always saddens me how so many people around the world cannot get along, especially on the heels of Veterans Day. Perhaps if we all tried to personally work a little harder on our own tolerance, conflict around the world could be eliminated. It is a worthy dream. Therefore, is going to do its part today to encourage tolerance, in regards to the UN’s suggestions to counteract intolerance.

    pedal car sedan-police car

    Fighting intolerance requires law:

We need rules and regulations to prevent hate crimes, discrimination and basic human rights. That requires police to enforce these laws, as well as courts, human rights commissioners and other arms of the law to prevent people from taken the law into their own hands and meting out their own brand of justice at the stake of others.

school bus wall art by max grover

    Fighting intolerance requires education:

Schools play a huge role in teaching people about the people, places and cultures of the world. Within the confines of the school setting, ignorance is banished. Children are taught tolerance for all, regardless of race, religion or culture, while encouraged to work together to get along for the benefit of all.

    oeuf modern mini library

Fighting intolerance requires access to information:

With ignorance, comes intolerance. When people are not sure about what other cultures or races are about, they form their own opinions, that are often laced with fear, anger and even violence. An excellent way to counteract that is by teaching people about the world around them. If information is available to enlighten people about things that they are uncertain about, like other races or cultures, that fear is extinguished. So head out to your local library and open a book, to open your eyes a little further.

    personalized christmas striped name sweater

    Fighting intolerance requires individual awareness:

There can be any manner of groups, schools and organizations out there trying to promote tolerance and understanding, but ultimately stamping out intolerance starts with YOU! We need to look inside ourselves and inspect our stereotypes to see where they come from and how they can be erased. Bigotry, racial jokes, segregation and more live inside of too many people still. If you can personally let those negative thoughts and emotions disappear, then you CAN change the world. Tolerance starts with you today.

    Fighting intolerance requires local solutions:

As you personally come to a greater state of tolerance, you can then move beyond that to work on eliminating intolerance immediately around you. Maybe you can start your own group at school, work or in your local community. Perhaps you could start a grass-roots organization right in your own neighborhood to promote tolerance of the world’s differences. Change always starts with one person, but has the ability to spark a movement.

is spreading the word. How are you fighting intolerance today?

    Saluting Heroes on Veterans Day

    Friday, November 11th, 2011

“In war, there are no unwounded soldiers” ~ José Narosky

Today is Veterans Day. It is a Federal holiday, where we have the opportunity to pause and reflect on those that have fought for our freedoms. The date reflects when Germany signed the Armistice Treaty, effectively ending the major hostilities of the First World War on November 11th, 1918. More importantly though, on this very special day, we stop to give thanks to all the troops who have fought in any wars or conflicts, or that have served in active duty since that time. Many have risked their lives and too many have died in the fighting, but on days like today, we remember. On Veterans Day, we give thanks.

    “Lord, bid war’s trumpet cease;
Fold the whole earth in peace.”
    ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

So today I bid you to recognize all the brave men and women that serve in the name of the United States of America. If you have family or loved ones overseas, think about sending them an e-card in thanks. Reach out to families that have loved ones deployed overseas and let them know that you appreciate all that they do, while you offer them a token of something that you can do in return to help. Perhaps you might even find time to visit a nursing home to offer appreciation to Veterans in person. And very importantly, please talk to your children about Veterans Day and what the sacrifices and dedication means for all Americans. Veterans actions make a difference.

salutes all the heroes that serve on Veterans Day. May your efforts not be in vain.

Some Help with Your Early Christmas Shopping

    Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

    Jingle bells, Jingle bells…

Oh excuse me! I still have songs in my head from shopping earlier. It would seem that Christmas is upon us, despite Thanksgiving still being two weeks away. Really though, there are only 45 days until Santa comes down the chimney! Plus, I just couldn’t help myself. You might hate me for saying this, but I have officially started my Christmas shopping. I need gifts for the neighbors and a little something for work associates, not mention the myriad of gifts for kids, the spouse and even the dog! So I thought I would start my shopping a little earlier this year. Plus, I can save a few pennies by catching the early deals. Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Do you need a few ideas for those difficult to buy for people? Let’s see if can help you out with some early personalized gifts.

First, lets think the neighbors. You noticed they had a lovely bathroom when they invited you over for a barbecue this past summer. Why not give them a personalized gift when you head over to their annual holiday gathering this year: original soaps trio with a name or phrase. It makes a perfect hostess gift! These custom personalized soap bars arrive carved in the name or phrase of your desire (up to 3 lines and 12 characters per line) presented in a timelessly elegant keepsake box. They are 100% vegetable based, Triple-Milled for luxurious lather and the freshest Personalized Soap in the marketplace.  Their warm white décor-complimenting color is gentle yet has an intoxicating aqua mineral scent(water-based fragrance: excellent for sensitive skin and noses). Now, how about the office staff? Hmm, I know! You can’t go wrong with personalized mouse pads. This personalized mouse pad by Dabney Lee will add a splash of color to your desk. It is fun + functional, it doubles as a notepad! Customize this by selecting your favorite style swatch and monogram type and color. It is a great way to enjoy your room or office. These make a great gift for teachers, teens and even your secret Santa gift for the lady in the corner office!

And is anyone else like me in buying a little something for the kid’s teachers? Well, why not pick up something helpful this year like a new clairebella personalized mugs. It also makes a perfect souvenir item for friends, family and co-workers.

And one last thought for today; what about the babysitter? Ugh, gift cards always work, but how about something with a little more thought this year. You know that all teens have them nowadays, so what about a cell phone case? Our clairebella personalized cell phone case with zebra pattern will give your expensive smartphone the ultimate protection while still keeping it stylish and sleek. The zebra design is exotic and attractive. These are made out of Lexan, higher than the status quo plastic which is extremely durable and easily snaps onto your device. Custom design your cell phone by pattern, color, and font. The inscription of your choice is heat printed onto the case, so there is no chance it will ever rub off or fading. This is a fantastic gift for pretty much anyone! Maybe Santa will bring you one too!

See, now you are in the Christmas spirit too! So start clicking and watch your holiday list get crossed off long before it was last year. Happy Holidays!
