    Happy World Thinking Day!

I know what you are thinking, and no, I did not make up this holiday. The good folks at the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts came up with World Thinking Day way back in 1926. I think it is not a bad idea either. On February 22nd every year, girl guides and scouts across the world dedicate themselves to thinking about their fellow girl guides and scouts, fundraising for World Thinking Day, plus most importantly, take part in fun and educational activities based on the present year’s theme. In 2013, the themes of World Thinking Day are “Together we can save children’s lives” and “Every mother’s life and health is precious“. is all about children, plus we cater to the mothers that raise them, so it is only natural that we tip our hat to these all important issues that affect us all.

medical keepsake box by child to cherish

It beautifully illustrates the miracle of pregnancy with such grace and charm. A Toast to Presidents

    Monday, February 18th, 2013

    green dot birthday plate

Happy Birthday George! And Happy birthday to Lincoln too.

Although neither one of these US Presidents would have actually celebrated their birthdays on February 18th. For those of you unaware of why today is a special day then, it is Presidents Day in the United States. The third Monday in February is the day to recognize and celebrate all US Presidents. While the holiday originally was set as Washington’s birthday back in 1885, it was permanently moved to the third Monday of February in 1971 and took on the title of Presidents Day. The timing of the federal holiday was planned to give more equal representation to two of the US’s most famous Presidents – George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Plus it also made for a much-needed, mid-winter break and subsequent long weekend in dreary February!

    george’s stripes and dots

So when were these great men actually born then?

George Washington was born in Virginia, on February 22, 1732 (Feb 11, 1731 OS). He was the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War against the British. This led him to be thought of as a National Hero. It also provided good reason for him to be selected to govern over the drafting of the Constitution. While he felt that his patriotic duty had been filled, the nation disagreed and on January 7, 1789 he was sworn in as the first President of the United States of America. After serving two terms in office, he returned to his estate, where he died in 1799. He is considered to be the “Father of His Nation” to this day.

    baby shower favor-piggy bank

    How about Abe?

Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. While his family was quite well-off when he was born, their wealth disappeared in land disputes when Abraham was quite young. This led him to be a proud, self-sufficient young man, who worked hard and considered himself self-taught in many avenues, despite his lack of any formal education. This upbringing stood him well, when he went on to enter politics. By 1846, he had been elected to the US House of Representatives. He might have only served one term in the House, but he had bigger things to come. After returning to his law career for a period, he again returned to politics and in 1860, partly due to his opposition of slavery, he was elected as the 16th President of the US.  His stance of slavery was a sore point in Southern states though and before his inauguration, many of those states swore to leave the Union. This was the beginning of the American Civil War. Thanks to Lincoln, it also ultimately spelled the end of slavery. Sadly, he was assassinated on April 15, 1865 while attending Ford’s Theatre, by John Wilkes Booth. His great sacrifice has not gone unnoticed by the American people though. Lincoln is considered one of the top three Presidents of all-time and has his face on the $5 bill, as well as one of the most cherished items for every child’s piggy bank - the penny.

So today, salutes these great men; true leaders of our great nation. And to all other presidents that have ruled before and since then, you do the United States proud. Thank you for all you do.

    A Look at Ash Wednesday

    Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return.

    —Genesis 3:19

handpainted baby plate – christening, baptism, or birth

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the Christian faith. It is celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and Methodists, as well as other Christian groups. Incidentally, Ash Wednesday falls the day after Shrove Tuesday. So how was your pancake supper, by the way? I hope you liked it, as now begins a time of fasting for those that recognize Lent and its lead up to Easter.

    desert decorative pillow

Where did Ash Wednesday originate, you wonder? According to several passages in the Bible, Jesus spent 40 days wandering in the desert. He was subjected to temptation from the devil, but resisted, instead focusing on fasting and prayer. Ash Wednesday marks the traditional beginning of Jesus’s fasting period, and as such, the presence of fasting and prayer continues.

personalized memo sets – palm paradise

In fact today, people are expected to fast or at least abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday. Others aspects of the day include prayer, represented by a trip to mass or other church services. While at church, ashes are applied to the faithful’s foreheads in the shape of the cross. This practice is meant to remind oneself that we have sinned and are in need of repentance. Traditionally, those ashes come from the previous year’s palm leaves that are used in Palm Sunday celebrations.

    personalized pink cross plaque

So with your forehead marked with the cross, the rest of the day is spent in prayer. The ashes mark sorrow at your sins and failings. They are supposed to be left to wear off of their own accord, leaving the reminder that we are imperfect beings in need of forgiveness from God. One of the ways that redemption can be won is via the giving alms. The thought is that the money saved from fasting can instead be taken and given as penance for our sins.

While Ash Wednesday has somber connotations, in the end it is about people’s relationship with God. Through reflection, prayer and penitence, absolution can be won, as God is merciful, so these Christian groups believe. And who are we at to disagree. May you find mercy today.
