    Celebrating Pregnancy

    Friday, September 13th, 2013

I saw the cutest baby bump this week. Pregnant women are just beautiful, aren’t they? They just have a brilliant glow about them that is hard to resist. Now, that doesn’t mean you should go and massage every pregnant woman’s belly that you see. You might get knocked into next week! You see women have these things called hormones that rage pretty good during pregnancy. All the Moms out there are nodding vigorously right about now. While I remember the excitement, I also remember the swollen ankles, aching back, and the time I yelled at my husband because he…

Hmm, perhaps that’s a story for a different time. Anyway, Babybox.com loves pregnant women regardless of their good days and bad. That’s why we have so many items that are specially crafted with them in mind. 13 cheers for round bodies this week!

    A Toast to Presidents

    Monday, February 18th, 2013

    green dot birthday plate

Happy Birthday George! And Happy birthday to Lincoln too.

Although neither one of these US Presidents would have actually celebrated their birthdays on February 18th. For those of you unaware of why today is a special day then, it is Presidents Day in the United States. The third Monday in February is the day to recognize and celebrate all US Presidents. While the holiday originally was set as Washington’s birthday back in 1885, it was permanently moved to the third Monday of February in 1971 and took on the title of Presidents Day. The timing of the federal holiday was planned to give more equal representation to two of the US’s most famous Presidents – George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Plus it also made for a much-needed, mid-winter break and subsequent long weekend in dreary February!

So when were these great men actually born then?

George Washington was born in Virginia, on February 22, 1732 (Feb 11, 1731 OS). He was the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War against the British. This led him to be thought of as a National Hero. It also provided good reason for him to be selected to govern over the drafting of the Constitution. While he felt that his patriotic duty had been filled, the nation disagreed and on January 7, 1789 he was sworn in as the first President of the United States of America. After serving two terms in office, he returned to his estate, where he died in 1799. He is considered to be the “Father of His Nation” to this day.

    How about Abe?

Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. While his family was quite well-off when he was born, their wealth disappeared in land disputes when Abraham was quite young. This led him to be a proud, self-sufficient young man, who worked hard and considered himself self-taught in many avenues, despite his lack of any formal education. This upbringing stood him well, when he went on to enter politics. By 1846, he had been elected to the US House of Representatives. He might have only served one term in the House, but he had bigger things to come. After returning to his law career for a period, he again returned to politics and in 1860, partly due to his opposition of slavery, he was elected as the 16th President of the US.  His stance of slavery was a sore point in Southern states though and before his inauguration, many of those states swore to leave the Union. This was the beginning of the American Civil War. Thanks to Lincoln, it also ultimately spelled the end of slavery. Sadly, he was assassinated on April 15, 1865 while attending Ford’s Theatre, by John Wilkes Booth. His great sacrifice has not gone unnoticed by the American people though. Lincoln is considered one of the top three Presidents of all-time and has his face on the $5 bill, as well as one of the most cherished items for every child’s piggy bank - the penny.

So today, Babybox.com salutes these great men; true leaders of our great nation. And to all other presidents that have ruled before and since then, you do the United States proud. Thank you for all you do.
